Connected Context Computing 感測連結運算網

如果只是單純將物與物之間都串連起來，其實距離所謂的智慧生活還有不小差距。人最寶貴的能力，就是可以透過學習、累積經驗，作為預測、判斷的知識。現在都是人來操控機器，賦予他們這些智慧，如果機器也能自己具備這種能力，真正的智慧生活即將來臨。如果電子元件可以掌握各種模式，根據諸多條件的情境(context)加以判斷預測並進行反應，就是擁有感測能力，再透過連結(connected)網路上雲端進行運算(computing)，就可以形成感測連結運算網(connected context computing)，這是未來10年科技發展的重大趨勢之一。

Intelligent Transportation System(ITS)

In this project, our goal is to develop a context-based micro-navigation system, which will provide instructions, such as changing left/right lane or speed-up/down, so that the driver can increase his safety margin to avoid a potential traffic hazard, while improving his driving efficiency to avoid traffic jam. To provide such micro-navigation service, the system needs to combine different technologies from various expertises, including M2M observations, distributed learning, and anticipatory reasoning.

Intelligent Care Service(ICS)

From wearable devices to autonomous robots, IoT devices and applications are being adopted that allow day-to-day, minute-to-minute decisions to be made adaptively “on the edge” - at the point where digital and physical worlds converge - rather than in a pre-defined manner. These decisions can be made exactly when they’re needed in informed, proactive, caring ways, allowing users to be assisted by simple actions, and protected from undesirable outcomes when engaging their daily functions and activities.

Green Sensing Platform

SIGGSP

Connected context computing includes the research areas in sensing, connectivity, computing and applications. For sensing, the first goal is to develop high-efficiency, low-power, and low-cost chips and modules. Therefore, SIGGSP (Green Sensing Platform) intends to address the development, design, implementation, and optimization issues for smart sensor nodes (in contrast to the so-called dust nodes) for high-end sensor-network applications. A sensor node consists of four major components: a processing unit (processor and memory element), a sensing unit (sensor and ADC), a transceiver unit (receiver and transmitter), and a power unit. To meet the future demand of M2M, SIGGSP aims to develop intelligent senor nodes (i-Sensor) by adding new features to current sensor node technology: the processing unit will be augmented with video coding and analysis units; the sensing unit will have various integrated sensors; the transceiver unit will be designed for ultra-low-power operations; and the power unit will be capable of capturing and storing energy from external sources in the ambient environment.

SIGSSA

Our vision is that digital sensing, processing, and communication capabilities will be ubiquitous and embedded into everyday objects, making them a part of the "Internet of Things". In coming decades, billions of smart sensors and devices will be connected and able to interact with each other without human intervention. They will generate data at an unprecedented scale and allow people to obtain information and control things in their surroundings or remote physical environments. To demonstrate how M2M technologies can improve the way we live, work, and play, we will investigate at least four M2M applications: intelligent transportation systems, energy conservation, remote ecological monitoring, and mobile E-health. Through these applications, we intend to identify new M2M technologies to be developed by the other three SIGs for these applications, while focusing on smart data acquisition and consumption. In addition, we will study how these M2M interaction technologies can bring more context awareness to the systems, and to the end users when required. Furthermore, to pave the way for transforming technological innovation into entrepreneurship, professors from business schools will be invited to help the technical teams.

Autonomous Reconfigurable Connectivity

SIGARC

In future M2M technologies, the problem of insufficient bandwidth must be addressed, because trillions of machines will be connected and will share the same limited bandwidth. Therefore, a technology that allows machines to autonomously find and use idle bands is required. In addition, while some devices are fixed, others may be moving at very high speeds. Providing connectivity for such devices remains a challenge. Therefore, the SIGARC, for autonomous reconfigurable connectivity, aims to develop technology that facilitates M2M communication between moving vehicles.

Context Analysis and Management

SIGCAM

After data is uploaded to the cloud, devices can make predictions and perform actions using their context analysis capability based on previous conditions and models. However, to achieve this goal, devices will need to have significant computing power for data analysis and creating context models. At the same time, data security and privacy also need to be improved. Therefore, the SIGCAM, for context analysis and management, aims to develop analysis and management technologies at the system level for processing the enormous amount of data generated with M2M technology, and to address several other crucial challenges across all layers, including management and security.
