Abstract

The Internet of Things has been a success for enterprises and several industrial sectors, but not yet a success for end-users in home environments at the fringe of the cloud. Many studies revealed that, beyond the initial amazement, connected devices add little value over their unconnected siblings, focus on too narrow use-cases in mostly hypothetical scenarios, often fail to provide a good out-of-the-box experience, and not able to learn and adapt in a meaningful way to our complex contextualized realities. With interactive intentional programming, we aim to solve smart home automation issues in a new way. This talk will introduce the main challenges, principles and IIP concepts, and their dynamics in an end-user context.

Biography

Dr. Mathias Funk is currently Assistant Professor in the Designed Intelligence group in the Department of Industrial Design, Eindhoven University of Technology. He has a background in Computer Science and a PhD in Electrical Engineering (from Eindhoven University of Technology). His research interests include design issues in cognitive systems, systems for musical expression, and domain-specific design tools. In the past, he has worked in research positions at The Advanced Telecommunications Laboratory (ATR), Japan, RWTH Aachen, and he has been Visiting Researcher at Philips Consumer Lifestyle, NTUST, Intel Labs Santa Clara and NTU. He is also the co-founder of UXsuite, a high-tech spin-off from Eindhoven University of Technology.
