[Invited Talk] Designing Intelligent Systems with Aesthetics and Rich Interaction

  • Topic : [Invited Talk] Designing Intelligent Systems with Aesthetics and Rich Interaction
  • Speaker: Prof. Yaliang Chuang (Eindhoven University of Technology)
  • Date: Wednesday, July 17th, 2019
  • Time: 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
  • Venue: 台灣大學博理館 7A / 台北市羅斯福路四段1號

Abstract

Digital devices and intelligent systems are becoming popular and ubiquitous all around us. However, they seldom provide sufficient communications to reassure users as to their current status and indicate what actions they are about to perform. In this talk, Yaliang will present the results of his recent studies on the design of human-IoT system interaction. The lecture is based on two papers, one published in ACM CHI conference 2018 (DOI: 10.1145/3173574.3173848), the other in ACM DIS conference 2017 (DOI: 10.1145/3064857.3079187). Meanwhile, he will also show some innovative design studies done by him and his colleagues at the Eindhoven University of Technology.

Biography

Yaliang Chuang is Assistant Professor in the Future Everyday cluster of the Department of Industrial Design. Chuang is interested in human-computer interactions, especially the challenges of a ubiquitous system, such as the smart home or manufacturing. His research focuses on exploring the applications of connected technologies and designing novel interfaces to facilitate natural and seamless interactions. Currently, he collaborates with the researchers of the NTU IoX center Taiwan in designing human-machine communications to enhance the situational awareness in smart environments. He also works with Dr. You on developing the collaborative social system that could facilitate the behavior changes of people with alcohol use disorder. Yaliang obtained his Ph.D. in Industrial Design from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST) in 2007. One year before his graduation, he co-founded the International Journal of Design (www.ijdesign.org) with his supervisor, Prof. Lin-Lin Chen. Since then, he continues to serve as its Managing Editor to assist the community to publish high-quality design research papers and promote them through global research databases, e.g. Web of Science and EBSCO Host.
